Aukana Buddha Statue

Aukana Buddha Statue is a standing Buddha Statue carved from solid granite, located in the village of Aukana in North Central Province of Sri Lanka. This 13m high statue was made during 5th century by King Dathusena

The meaning of Aukana is “Sun – Eating” (Au – Sun, Kana – Eating). It is said that the name derived so since the sun rays first light up this huge finely carved statue.

On a rainy day, it is said that one can see droplets of water falling off the tip of the statue’s nose hitting the ground exactly between the toes

Aukana Buddha Statue is a famous tourist attraction today.
